Katja Prins
Statement
Katja Prins is one of the most talented Dutch designers today. She interprets a vision of contemporary jewellery that has made Holland the source of numerous artists capable of transforming the concept of personal adornment, into a true art that is to be worn, with a democratic and socially revolutionary concept.
To Katja Prins objects and instruments are extremely fascinating. In fact, they have a fascination that goes beyond the reason behind their creation, an interest exploring the various meanings within.
When entering her studio, apart from the usual tools one would find in jewellers workshop, you will also find a gas mask. It is not intended for use, but serves as a starting point for creativity, to show a contrast between an instrument of protection and an instrument of terror. She likes to play with these double meanings, with the strength each instrument has within it.
In her latest jewellery there is a search for detail, which counteracts the austere shapes and colours brought about by the plastic and silver elements.
The grey colour of the pieces and the detail showing doors, windows, tubes, structural elements, transform the piece into a new type of monolithic building, reminding us of small-scale architectural buildings, but also of structures that can be applied to the body, as though they were functional elements. Katja Prins' jewellery is therefore geared towards a poetic interpretation of symbols of our time; machines/instruments and our body.
